Kera ist ein Ex-Marine, die nach zwei Einsätzen in Afghanistan ihren Abschied genommen hat und nun als Managerin in einem Coffeeshop arbeitet. Als sie eines Tages beobachtet, wie ein Mann ein junges Mädchen verprügelt, mischt sie sich ein und bekommt ein Messer in die Brust gerammt. Als Anerkennung für ihre Tapferkeit wird sie von der nordischen Göttin Skuld zu einer Crow, also einer Krähe, gemacht, einer Sterblichen, die im Auftrag der Göttin Aufgaben auf der Erde erfüllt. Vig ist hingegen ein Raven, er gehört einem der anderen Clans an, der mehr oder weniger freundschaftlich zu den Crows steht, ein gefragter Waffenschmied und schon vor ihrer Verwandlung in Kera verliebt. Natürlich gibt es noch viele andere Clans, Götter, Walküren, Dämonen, außerdem Zickenkrieg und der Weltuntergang ist vermutlich nicht mehr weit entfernt.Und das war für mich auch die große Schwäche dieser Geschichte. Es passiert einfach zu viel, es werden so viele Personen eingeführt, dass der Autorin gar keine Zeit bleibt, ihren eigentlichen Hauptpersonen Kera und Vig den nötigen Raum zu geben. Ich hätte mir am liebsten ein Personenregister angelegt, um den Überblick zu behalten. Kera schwere Kindheit, ihre Zeit als Soldatin? Wird in wenigen Worten nur angedeutet, keine Rede, wie es sie als Person beeinflusst hat, oder warum sie Panikattacken hat. Bei Vig ist es ähnlich. Zwar wird sein Ruf als grausamer Krieger angesprochen (eigentlich ist er natürlich ein Marshmallow), aber wie er dazu kam? Keine Rede davon. Stattdessen tausend Nebenschauplätze, die vermutlich im Laufe der nächsten Bücher noch wichtig werden. Für diese Geschichte wäre es besser gewesen, einige Handlungsstränge wegzulassen und sich etwas mehr auf das Wesentliche zu konzentrieren.
Also wer die Bücher von Shelly Laurenston bzw. G.A. Aiken mochte, der wird dieses Buch auch so verschlingen wie ich.Wie immer witzig, sexy und mit Tiefe.Daumen hoch!
Initially some nice world building, some interesting characters. But the book never gets off the ground. There is a lot of talking, the characters have the maturity of really shallow teenagers and the plot never develops at all.The main character is an ex-marine and has been on two tours to Afghanistan. She sounds like she's still in high school. Her male counterpart starts off with a lot of potential, but also goes nowhere fast.There are various clans, fighting each others in the name of some Norse gods. A quarter into the book I still hadn't figured out why and it all felt pretty pointless.One bonus point for a Tolkien reference, but other than that I was bored and did not care what happens next. I kept pushing myself from one chapter to the next, in the hopes of something interesting happening, but finally gave up at 35%. Even the main character finding her wings couldn't convince me to try for a few more chapters. If there is a good story somewhere, it took too long to raise its head.
